The Auguste-Delaune stadium was the scene this Tuesday of the 16th final of the Coupe de between and Monaco.

A duel which saw the Rémois qualify for the round of 16 after the penalty shootout (1-1, 3-1 tab). The match started with a lot of rhythm, allowing Breel Embolo to get the first opportunity (2nd). ASM continued to push with Eliesse Ben Seghir whose shot from the edge of the area escaped the target high up (5th). In the process, Reims showed itself for the first time but Junya Ito crossed his shot too much in an axial position (7th). A first quarter of an hour full of situations ended with a goal from Takumi Minamino, refused for an offside position.

Monaco tried a lot

The pace then dropped and Reims opened the scoring thanks to Cédric Kipré (45th). The defender took a free kick from Teddy Teuma with a powerful header to shake the net. Halftime was whistled on this one-goal lead. Monaco was the main player in the second half but did not convert any of its two big opportunities by Breel Embolo (54th) and Takumi Minamino (60th). The Red and Whites were finally rewarded by equalizing by Mohammed Salisu, catapulting with his head a cross from winter recruit Mika Biereth (70th). AS Monaco, much more enterprising than Reims, did not score a second goal before the end of the match.

Reims at the end of the suspense

It was therefore in the penalty shootout that the two teams were decided. A session that Monaco started painfully, not converting any of its first three attempts. Reims striker Cédric Kipré did not convert the first qualifying ball. In the process, Oumar Diakité took it upon himself to extend the Reims adventure by deceiving Philipp Köhn. Reims struggled but the final result – a qualification for the round of 16 – is worth remembering for Luka Elsner’s team.
