There’s nothing left of the room. The patient who occupied it set fire to her bed around 8:30 a.m. Emergency services arrive a few minutes later to evacuate the 13 patients, but in the room next door, a woman refuses to leave her room despite the insistence of professionals.

Cécile Bardet, Doctor in charge of the SAMU, was present at the time of the intervention: “Unfortunately, one person died, it was a 66-year-old person, who died despite the resuscitation maneuvers provided by the medical team. Three other people were transported to the emergency room, a patient, a caregiver and security personnel from the hospital center. These three people are in stable condition, but require monitoring for a few hours.

Three caregivers were present in the department at the time of the incident. According to the head of the psychiatric unit Pascal Bloch, the intervention procedure took place according to the rules: There is a fire emergency system that worked, there are procedures and tests that are carried out regularly. There everything was going normally until a particularly rapid invasion of smoke, hence the extraordinarily unfortunate delay in extracting the person concerned from this very toxic atmosphere.“.

All patients had to be transferred to another unit. They will not return to their original building, because the renovation was already planned before the disaster, according to Bruno Faulconnier, the Director of the Niort hospital center, who adds that “The establishment has just received confirmation of significant aid from the Regional Health Agency, all adult psychiatry will be redone“.

It is one of the oldest buildings, but it was in working order, it is not its dilapidation which explains the facts.
