Trump administration faces Senate test

The US Senate will begin confirmation hearings for members of Donald Trump’s future administration on Tuesday, January 14. These proceedings, scheduled to last several weeks, promise to be stormy for certain controversial candidates, starting with Pete Hegseth, appointed to lead the Pentagon. A former major and Fox News anchor, Hegseth has been criticized for his lack of experience, controversial statements about women in the military and a 2017 sexual assault allegation that he categorically denies.

Democrats, led by Senator Elizabeth Warren, strongly oppose his nomination, pointing to behavior deemed inappropriate, including excessive alcohol consumption. Hegseth, who intends to reform the Pentagon, which he describes as “woke,” also sparked controversy by proposing to once again ban transgender people from enlisting.

While during his first term Donald Trump had favored established Republican figures, this time he is betting on loyalists and financial support to form his cabinet. In addition to Pete Hegseth, Kristi Noem (Homeland Security), Pam Bondi (Justice) and Marco Rubio (Foreign Affairs) will appear before the Senate committee in the coming days.

The nomination of Pete Hegseth represents a test for the Republican majority in the Senate, which must decide on these sensitive appointments. If the Senate were to reject one of those picks, it would be a historic setback for Donald Trump, on the eve of his return to the White House.

Despite the controversy, the president-elect reiterated his support for Pete Hegseth, calling him a “winner” determined to strengthen national defense and refocus America’s military priorities.
