The United States Senate will begin confirmation hearings for members of Donald Trump’s future administration today, Tuesday, January 14. The proceedings, which will last several weeks, promise to be a whirlwind for some controversial candidates, starting with Pete Hegseth, who has been named to lead the Pentagon. Hegseth, a former major and Fox News anchor, has been criticized for his lack of experience, controversial statements he made about women in the military and sexual assault allegations in 2017.

Democrats, led by Senator Elizabeth Warren, strongly oppose the appointment, citing alleged inappropriate behavior, including excessive drinking. Hegseth, who has sought to reform the Pentagon, which he described as “awakened,” has sparked controversy by proposing to ban transgender people from reenlisting.

While Donald Trump supported Republicans during his first term in office, this time he is working with loyalists and funding to reshape his cabinet. In addition to Pete Hegseth, Christie Noem (Homeland Security), Pam Bondi (Justice) and Marco Rubio (Foreign Affairs) will appear before Senate committees in the coming days.

Pete Hughes’ nomination represents a challenge to the Republican majority in the Senate, which must decide on these sensitive appointments. If the Senate rejects one of these nominations, it would be a historic setback for Donald Trump on the eve of his return to the White House.

Despite the controversy, the president-elect reiterated his support for Pete Hegsett, calling him a “winner” to strengthen national defense and refocus the United States’ military priorities.
