The Malian government has seized three tonnes of gold belonging to Canadian mining company Barrick in order to recover an estimated $180 million in revenue the company owes to the Malian state.
The seized gold comes from a mine located near Kayes, in the west of the country, a key region for gold mining. This action follows a warning letter sent at the beginning of January by the Malian judicial authorities, signaling their intention to proceed with the seizure.
In December 2024, Mali issued an arrest warrant for the CEO of Barrick on charges of money laundering. The mining company, which is at the center of several disputes with Bamako, has offered to settle $370 million to try to resolve these disputes.
