German Defense Minister visits Kyiv to reaffirm Berlin’s support for Ukraine

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius arrived in Kyiv on Tuesday for a surprise visit, after a meeting in Warsaw the day before with his French, British, Italian and Polish counterparts.

Boris Pistorius said his visit was aimed at underline Germany’s strong support for Ukraine as the imminent inauguration of Donald Trump could lead to a drop in US aid to Kyiv.

The minister states that “Germany, as the largest NATO country in Europe, stands with Ukraine – not alone, but with the Group of Five and many other allies”adding that “Germany, as NATO’s largest partner in Europe, naturally plays a special role in this regard, as it has done over the past three years”.

Donald Trump’s inauguration casts doubt on American aid

During his electoral campaign, Donald Trump criticized the cost of the war in Ukraine to American taxpayers and promised to quickly end the conflict, without specifying how.

It also demands that Europe provide a greater share of support to Kyiv.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke by telephone with French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday to discuss strategies to ensure Ukraine’s security.

Last year, Emmanuel Macron appeared isolated on the European scene when he raised the possibility of sending Western troops to Ukraine, but the issue seems to be back on the agenda.

Volodymyr Zelensky says Ukraine will need security guarantees to support any peace deal, and he said late Monday that he had discussed the issue with the French leader.

“Among these guarantees, we discussed the French initiative to deploy military contingents in Ukraine”declares the Ukrainian leader. “We considered practical measures for its implementation, possible expansion and the involvement of other countries in this process”.

Sending European troops to Ukraine as peacekeeping forces would involve many risks and could drag NATO, including the United States, into a real global conflict.
