Tony DeAngelo leaves the KHL and returns to America

Earlier this fall, Tony DeAngelo, who was an unrestricted free agent, signed a one-year contract with SKA St. Petersburg.

The first-round pick in the 2014 NHL draft was trying to rebuild his name in Russia after a polarizing stint with four teams on the Bettman circuit.

After 34 games in the KHL, DeAngelo returns home as the team announces the termination of his contract by mutual agreement for family reasons.

With 6 goals and 26 assists since the start of the season, DeAngelo has established himself as an important piece of the SKA while he was the leader in points tied with forward Sergei Plotnikov. He even had more points than Canadian prospect Ivan Demidov (32) and former NHLer Evgeny Kuznetsov (33).

DeAngelo even led the entire KHL in points among defensemen this season.

In a statement, DeAngelo explained that he had to leave Russia for family reasons and said the decision was difficult to make. He doesn’t offer specific details, but he appears to be leaving the organization on good terms.
