The snowboard, a skateboard on snow? Discovery in Verdun

Around twenty children and adults were able to learn how to snowboard, or snowskateat Arthur-Therrien Park in Verdun, on January 11. For the second year in a row, the Arrondissement of Verdun organized a free introductory activity, in collaboration with the private company Snotech, specializing in winter installations in urban areas.

That day, the company was responsible for maintaining the sliding track set up specifically for the activity. “Snowskating doesn’t cost that much, and it’s easier to learn. It’s super accessible compared to snowboarding and skiing, where the equipment costs more,” says Snotech co-owner Ulysse Dubé Burelle.

A snowboard looks like a skateboard (skateboard) but does not have wheels. It is grooved lengthwise below so that its user can more easily maintain control over the snow.

Conduct of the initiation session

Skateboarding enthusiast and founder of the NM skateboard school, Naomie Mariné led the session.

Each time a group of people approached the slope, Ms. Mariné invited them to test the snowboard. Before setting off on the slope, explanations and a short demonstration were required.

“There, the snow is soft. So, it glides gently like on a cloud. It’s good for learning and then you start to want to go faster,” she says.

Very quickly, beginners managed to master the technique. So, Ms. Mariné allowed herself to let them go on their own, but did not hesitate to advise them on how to improve their posture and technique.

Provided by Ms. Mariné, 15 snowboards and helmets were available on site, but there was a good turnover which allowed everyone to try.

Verdun resident Juan Carlos Sanchez Ledesma found snowboarding “very fun. » He and his daughter tried this sport for the first time. As a winter sports fan, he appreciates the borough’s initiative.
