Tyson Fury has said he wants to retire from boxing following his loss to Oleksandr Usyk. This is not the first retirement announcement.
Tyson Fury announces his retirement from boxing again
After “Gypsy King” Tyson was recently beaten twice by Oleksandr Usyk, it is seemingly clear what will happen next for him in boxing. Fury had yet to announce his future plans in the sport, as a huge fight against Anthony Joshua in 2025 was planned and he recently proved that he is still one of the greatest of his era.
However, today Fury announced he has no interest in fighting Joshua and will retire from the sport with immediate effect.
In a statement on social media, he said: “Hey everyone, I’ll be short and sweet. I would like to announce my retirement from boxing, it was great. I loved every minute of it and will end with this. Dick Turpin wore a mask (British proverb, editor’s note). We all see ourselves on the other side.

-Fury was known in the past for taking early retirement and announcing his retirement, only to return to boxing. In 2013, he announced that he was hanging up his gloves after the failure of his fight against David Haye. But he came back and made boxing history when Wladimir dethroned Klitschko. After his victory over Klitschko in November 2015, he was forced to take a break from the ring.
In 2018, he announced his return after losing many kilos to get back into shape. Fury fought back and became world champion again against KO king Deontay Wilder, this time according to the WBC version. The Briton then announced his retirement again in April 2022 after beating Dillian Whyte in a major British showdown at Wembley Stadium. However, he returned and fought Derek Chisora for a third time later that same year.
This situation is not unknown to boxing fans and connoisseurs. Rage is often a walking enigma that depressive phases abuse repeatedly. In various interviews, he explained that he needed boxing to get his life back on track. He needs training, but above all routine and a goal to achieve. As we know, his goal to become “Undisputed Champion” against Oleksandr Usyk failed. But maybe the 36-year-old will discover new goals, maybe Turki Alalshikh will also take out his checkbook for a huge purse and Fury will return…
One might wonder whether his current announcement to hang up his gloves on the famous nail can really be taken seriously. Nevertheless, a British mega duel against his compatriot Anthony Joshua seems to be happening again. having moved very far away. His resignation announcement could ultimately also be a shrewd negotiating tactic. An indication of this would be his line in the video “Dick Turpin wore a mask”.
Dick Turpin was a famous English thief. What he means by “Dick Turpin wore a mask” is that Dick Turpin at least tried to hide his identity when he was committing thefts/burglaries. The implication is that someone is trying to rob someone else red-handed. So, are negotiations already underway for an Anthony Joshua fight and Fury was offered too low a purse? It’s entirely possible – it’s also entirely possible that he will NOT quit boxing.
