A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck southwest Mexico on Sunday, causing no casualties or damage, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) announced.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located eight kilometers from the town of Calcoman de Vázquez Pallares, which has around 20,000 inhabitants and is approximately 600 kilometers west of the capital, Mexico City.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 86.2 kilometers.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Twitter that national emergency services had informed her that “there were no new developments” and that they were monitoring the situation in Cualcoman.
-Mexico is located between five tectonic plates, making it one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, especially on the Pacific coast.
In 1985, an 8.1 magnitude earthquake destroyed much of Mexico City, killing thousands.
On September 19, 2017, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake killed 369 people, most of them in the capital.
