The French day ends better than it began. After the eliminations of Rinderknech, Muller and Jeanjean it is the turn of Benjamin Bonzi to qualify for the next stage. After Arthur Cazaux earlier this Monday, January 13, there are two of them to have qualified today.
A French duel?
Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi, 64th in the ATP rankings, qualified on Monday for the second round of the Australian Open by snatching his first victory in four confrontations against Belgian David Goffin (54th). Winner of his first title on the main circuit at the ATP 250 in Metz in November, the 28-year-old right-hander won 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 (9/7).
In the 2nd round, he will face the Italian Francesco Passaro (104th), beaten in the 3rd round of qualifying but drafted into the main draw thanks to the withdrawal of his compatriot Fabio Fognini (88th). In the first round, Passaro benefited on Monday from the abandonment of the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (10th), led 7-5, 2-1 when he threw in the towel, to advance to the 2nd round.

In the event of a victory against the Italian, Bonzi would equal his best performance at the Australian Open (3rd round in 2023). He could also find Hugo Gaston, if the latter wins his match against Lehecka.
