Since this Sunday, the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka and the Italian Jannik Sinner, winners of the Australian Open in 2024, have put their title back on the line. The world number ones of the WTA and the ATP are among the favorites to their own succession, but in both tables, the suitors are numerous. They will fight to lift the trophy of the first Grand Slam of the 2025 season. But also for the millions at stake on the other side of the globe. Here are the crazy prize figures for the 2025 Australian Open.
The total prize pool for the tournament is 96.5 million Australian dollars, which represents 54.4 million Swiss francs. Compared to 2024, the 2025 prize money increased by almost 12% to become the highest in the history of the Australian Open. Growth is even 119% compared to 2016! However, this is not a record for a Grand Slam. It still belongs to the US Open 2024 with just over 68 million francs shared between the athletes.
In Tennis, pay parity has been required in Grand Slams since 2007. Winners in 2024, Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner pocketed 1.78 million Swiss francs for their coronation at Melbourne Park. This year, the champions will receive 1.97 million. The sum will be 1.07 million for the finalists. All participants finishing in the semi-finals, or earlier, will receive an amount less than one million. It will be around 75,000 francs for all the losers of the first round.
The organizers of the first round of the Grand Slam also revealed the prize pools for the doubles tournament, where again, pay parity is required. Less publicized, the financial gap between singles and doubles is immense. The winning pair will collect around 456,000 francs, more than four times less than the singles winners. This amount must then be shared between the two players. As for a duo eliminated in the first round, they will receive 22,000 francs.
Regarding the athletes who have accumulated the most money in their career and entered this Australian Open, the figures are also quite staggering. Unsurprisingly, it is Novak Djokovic among the men. The best player in history has already pocketed 170 million francs, his closest pursuer is the German Alexander Zverev (46 million).
The identity of the richest woman, however, is more surprising. The Belarusian Victoria Azarenka (35 million) is narrowly ahead of the Polish Iga Swiatek (31 million).
