RUSSIAN DISTINCTION
Vladimir Putin on Saturday awarded Russia’s highest decoration to a Russian soldier who authorities say killed a Ukrainian soldier during hand-to-hand combat. The Russian president awarded the title of Hero of Russia to Andrei Grigoriev for “his courage and heroism”, the Kremlin said.
Russian military bloggers published a video in early January filmed by a GoPro-type camera worn by a Ukrainian soldier. In the images, this soldier advances towards a house, then an exchange of fire begins and he throws a grenade inside the building. A Russian soldier comes out and the two men begin to fight with their bare hands and knives. The soldier carrying the camera, who shouts cries for help in Ukrainian, asks his adversary at the end of the video to let him die in peace and says in particular “goodbye, mother”.

Hello and welcome to TF1info to follow the news around the war in Ukraine this Sunday, January 12, 2025.
The Russian army claimed on Saturday to have gained ground northwest of the Ukrainian town of Kurakhové, an important stronghold that Moscow said it had conquered earlier this week in the Donetsk region (east).
In a statement, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that units of the Center grouping had “released” the locality of Shevchenko. This village is located about 10 kilometers northwest of the center of Kourakhové. According to the Russian news agency Ria Novosti, its control makes it possible to limit Ukrainian fire on this city and to continue advancing towards the western borders of the Donetsk region.
Moscow claimed on Monday to have conquered Kurakhové, a defensive position of importance for Ukrainian troops in the south of the Donbass mining basin. The loss of this town, which had around 18,000 inhabitants before the war, has not since been officially confirmed by Ukraine.
Russian troops have advanced slowly but steadily on the front throughout 2024, without achieving a major breakthrough. They also threaten the city of Pokrovsk, an important logistical hub for Ukrainian forces.
