La Condamine schoolchildren made aware of the risk of flooding

After the floods of 2002, EPTB Vidourle launched, as part of the Vidourle Flood Prevention Action Program (Papi Vidourle), a flood risk awareness program for schools.

The objective is to improve knowledge about this river and to strengthen the culture of risk by first raising awareness among young people on several occasions during their school curriculum. Thus, the operation proposed by the EPTB allows CE2, CM1 and 5th grade students to benefit from one day per year of awareness raising and educational interventions punctuated by discovery outings, role plays, scientific experiments, models, etc.

Following the call for applications launched at the start of the school year, the Condamine school located in Sommières contacted the EPTB in order to benefit from these activities. Thus, on Monday January 6, around a 3D model representing the Vidourle watershed, the students of the CM1 class of the La Condamine school, in Sommières, positioned roads, dikes, houses, bridges and then caused a flood in order to see the damage caused to the various developments.

Understanding the flood phenomenon

This allowed the children to appreciate the importance of the proper functioning of the facilities and to better understand the phenomenon of Vidourle floods, commonly called Vidourlades.

During various thematic workshops, the students also addressed the phenomenon of the formation of Cévennes rains through the water cycle and learned the safety instructions in the event of flooding.

Since 2004, in the Vidourle watershed, nearly 39,000 students have benefited from these days.

The action is financed by the State (FPRNM up to 80%) and the EPTB Vidourle (20%). The EPTB coordinates and takes care of the activities as well as the on-site transport of the students. For the 2024-2025 school year, activities were entrusted to the Mayane education association based in and the transport of students to sites was entrusted to the Keolis Languedoc company based in Nîmes.

Finally, in addition to producing the animations, the 2024-2025 school year is also devoted to the design of an animation for second grade classes with the creation of dedicated educational tools as well as the production of animations for a few test classes. At the start of the 2025 school year, activities will be offered to all high schools present in the Vidourle watershed.
