The Saint-Laurent chapel current Eu, in Seine-Maritimedates from the 19th century.
It is said that it was from the top of this hill that the Archbishop of Dublinin Ireland, Laurent O’Toole, discovered the city, where he died in 1180.
The place has long been a place of pilgrimage and walks, offering an incomparable panorama of the Sister Cities.
At the time of this ancient view, it was also a place for grazing sheep.
Fun detail: the message on the old postcard is far from being as bucolic as the image. A woman asks her aunt for a bushel of potatoes, while complaining about a neighbor who threw a pot of water at her as she passed by.
A belief also surrounds the site.
In 2009, Anne Marchand in his work “on the legends, beliefs, traditions and curiosities of Seine-Maritime”, describes that the sandstone stone located near the chapel would bear “the imprint of a human foot, surmounted by a monolithic cross. It would be that of Saint-Laurent who would have stopped there, to question shepherds before entering the city.”
2025, year of Ireland
The pediment of the building was restored by the municipality in 2021.
In 2025, the city and parish will offer several activities and celebrations for 800 years of the canonization of Saint-Laurent. This year will therefore be the year of Ireland in Eu.
