The board of directors of the American giant voted against a shareholder proposal aimed at putting an end to it.
Ford, Jack Daniel’s, Walmart, McDonald’s, Meta… Faced with “anti-woke” lobbying, all these American giants will drastically reduce their programs in favor of diversity. The latter had progressed after the immense wave of anti-racist protest, which followed the death, in 2020, of George Floyd, an African-American killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis. A few days before Donald Trump’s arrival at the White House, they fall one after the other. Maybe not at Apple.
“Inappropriate manner”
According to a document submitted to the Wall Street watchdog (SEC), the National Center for Public Policy Research submitted to the vote of the shareholders of the firm founded by Steve Jobs, a proposal « abandoning diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts ». This conservative think tank wants to spare Apple from possible legal action, after a Supreme Court ruling in 2023, putting an end to affirmative action measures in university admissions. The board of directors, on which Apple boss Tim Cook sits, rejects this argument. He emphasizes that the company has a program « well established » to comply with the law. The directors accuse the conservative think-tank of wanting to “micro-manage” the company, by seeking « inappropriately restrict its ability to manage its personnel and business strategies ». The proposal will be put to a vote at the general meeting of shareholders on February 25.
