An Electric Match Under a Rain of Boxes

Defensive balls, offensive festival, card madness… The - match was completely crazy! Dive into the crazy stats of this meeting…

The Auguste-Delaune stadium was the scene of a completely crazy meeting this weekend between Stade de Reims and OGC Nice. An electric match which produced an avalanche of goals and cards in a supercharged atmosphere. A look back at the highlights and crazy statistics from this Reims-Nice like no other.

A rain of goals and balls

From the kick-off, the tone was set with a frantic pace and repeated offensives from both sides. But it was the Rémois who shot first, opening the score in the 10th minute following an incredible ball from the Nice goalkeeper. A gift that boosted the locals, creating a multitude of clear chances in the process.

Nice managed to equalize against the run of play just before the break, in turn taking advantage of a gross defensive error on the Reims side. But the Champenois quickly took the lead after returning from the locker room, with two goals in quick succession including a marvelous volley from young Hugo Ekitike. Mass seemed to be said.

Nice’s incredible comeback

This was without taking into account the crazy reaction of pride of the eaglets. Trailing 3-1 at the hour mark, Christophe Galtier’s men increased their level of intensity to get back on track in the space of 10 minutes. Andy Delort first reduced the gap with a header from a corner, before Amine Gouiri equalized from the penalty spot after a handball from Reims in the area.

It’s an incredible scenario! We lead 3-1, we have the match in hand and in a few minutes everything changes… There is a lot of frustration.

Oscar Garcia, Reims coach

A completely crazy ending

The last 20 minutes were totally crazy, with an offensive festival on both sides and chances galore. The defenses took on water, the goalkeepers increased their parades and the tension rose a notch. Reims thought they could snatch victory in the 85th minute with a missile from Abdelhamid but the VAR refused the goal for a precise offside. In the process, the referee excluded two players, one from each camp, for the start of a fight. The match ended in an indescribable atmosphere with 10 minutes of added time and crazy chances in both areas. The score ultimately didn’t change. Phew!
