“The Palms” – “Getafe”
Suspensions : Diego Rico (“Getafe”)
Injured: Viti Rosada – Allan Nyom
Doubtful: Dario Essugo, Jose Campana (both – “Las Palmas”)
About to be suspended: Omar Alderete, Alex Sola (both – “Getafe”)
“The Palms”
The islanders concluded 2024 with a five-match unbeaten run, starting with a sensational historic victory against Barcelona away with a score of 2:1. It was the fourth away victory for the Canarians since Diego Martinez took charge in mid-December. Subsequently, the yellow-blues also won an away victory against the modest “Europa” (2:1) in a cup meeting, but their next away match ended in a complete debacle – a 0:4 defeat against “Elche” resulting in their elimination from the Copa del Rey. Although it is not the most pleasant start to the year, it is not considered a tragedy, because “Las Palmas” favors La Liga.
-In the Championship, the islanders are currently enjoying a four-match unbeaten run, accumulating 10 points and establishing a healthy seven-point gap to the relegation zone. Moreover, a victory in this next match will almost certainly propel them into the top half of the table (currently, the yellow-blues share 13th-14th places with “Sevilla”). Regarding this unbeaten streak, after a successful trip to Barcelona, ”Las Palmas” consolidated its momentum with a similar 2:1 home victory against “Valladolid”, followed by a 0:0 draw against “Real Sociedad ” in San Sebastián and a 1:0 victory over “Espanyol” on the final day.
“Getafe”
On the other hand, the “azulones” successfully reached the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey, narrowly winning 1:0 against “Granada” in overtime. The decisive goal came from Borja Mayoral in the 93rd minute, who virtually missed the entire first half of the season due to injury. Additionally, Jose Bordalas’ side are now on a clear path to the quarter-finals, with their next Copa del Rey opponent being ‘Pontevedra’ from the 4th division, who sensationally eliminated ‘Levante’ (4:1) , “Villarreal” (1:0) and “Mallorca” (3:0) consecutively. So, as long as they don’t underestimate their opponent, “Getafe” is bound to progress to the next round.
On the other hand, the ‘azulones’ must return to the focus on La Liga results as they prepare to play their final match of the first half of the season, finding themselves in 17th place, just one point ahead of “Espanyol” and four points above “Valencia” and “Valladolid”. They have achieved victories in their last five meetings with these teams, starting with a 2:0 victory against the “white-purples” and followed by a 1:0 victory against “Las Palmas”. Between these victories, Jose Bordalas’ team suffered an expected defeat against “Real” (0:2) and lost their last two matches of the year by the same score against “Atletico” away and “Mallorca “at home.
“The Palms” – “Getafe” : Predictable Alignments
For “Las Palmas”, full-back Viti Rosada is definitely excluded. Additionally, it is likely that midfielders Dario Essugo and Jose Campana will also be out for the next match. For “Getafe”, their main left-back Diego Rico is suspended, while versatile winger Allan Nyom is currently injured.
“The Palms” – “Getafe” : Author’s prediction
With Diego Martinez in charge, “Las Palmas” won three of their four home matches, with only one heartbreaking defeat attributed to peculiar decisions by the refereeing team. On the other hand, “Getafe” are yet to secure an away win this season, suffering six defeats in eight matches, with only one goal scored in those encounters. Although the opponents were mostly quite serious, the islanders are in good shape. So, Jose Bordalas’ team is unlikely to end this unpleasant streak. Moreover, matches in the Canaries have previously proven difficult for “Getafe”, although they can still get a draw. Alternatively, “Las Palmas” could again narrowly win at “Gran Canaria”.
