“It is becoming urgent to prepare the fighting world for the coming years”: in , a ceremony of wishes from patriotic associations between thanks, projects and fears

If, during the greeting ceremony, thanks are appropriate, it is also an opportunity to address certain sensitive subjects. Jacques Février, president of the understanding committee of veterans and patriotic associations in , raised the question of aging structures and the threat posed by the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

“Like every year, we exchange good wishes. I also wanted to take stock of the situation and present the objectives for the future.” This Friday, January 10, the traditional ceremony of wishes addressed to the veterans and patriotic associations of Carcassonnais was held. To begin the session, the president of the understanding committee, Jacques Février, discussed several current issues, the needs of these structures and even future projects for the year 2025.

“Nuclear threats are becoming more and more present, he started. I am also thinking of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia which demonstrated our lack of resources in terms of material and human resources while the war is now anchored on European soil. We are far from a war economy.” A more global point of view which he then brought to the local level by highlighting the aging structures of Carcassonnais. “According to an opinion pollster, our 18-25 year olds feel less concerned by a spirit of defense. It is becoming urgent to prepare the fighting world for the coming years. This fragmentation represents the first factor of disaffection.” The subject is close to the heart of Jacques Février who then elaborated on the duty of memory. That this one “should be accompanied by the duty to transmit”.

Apart from this solemn preamble, the president of the understanding committee of associations of patriotic veterans in Carcassonne announced the projects for 2025. Starting with a restructuring of the 39 associations. “Currently, we identify three classes of defense (agreement between an educational establishment and military training, Editor’s note) which promote social integration and academic success. We would like to have two more by the end of the year.”

If the mayor of the Aude capital, Gérard Larrat, was not present during the greeting ceremony, the deputy delegate for military affairs and veterans Magali Bardou gave a speech on his behalf. “You help to set the rhythm of the memorial calendar each year. You are active in the transmission of our memories.” She concluded by directly addressing the flag bearers present: “I wish to show the respect that is due to you.”
