Joseph Aoun takes oath and officially takes office as President of Lebanon

General Joseph Aoun, elected president of Lebanon, took the oath of office before Parliament.

In his speech, he announced the opening of a new page for Lebanon, stressing that the political and economic crisis required profound reforms.

Joseph Aoun is committed to adopting a law on the independence of justice in collaboration with the future government.

Stressing the need to combat crime, he called for unity under the aegis of law and justice to build a new nation.

Emphasizing the protection of Lebanon’s borders and maintaining stability, he said, “We will invest in our army to prevent Israeli aggression against Lebanon and fight terrorism.”

Aoun also announced a restructuring of public institutions.

“As Commander-in-Chief, I am committed to restructuring public institutions and ensuring that the State alone exercises a monopoly on force.” he said.

Joseph Aoun promised to strengthen security services to fight insecurity and enforce the law. He announced the reconstruction of the southern regions, Bekaa and Dahieh, devastated by Israeli attacks. He called for a national defense strategy to end the Israeli occupation.

Aoun said his government would establish good relations with Arab countries, particularly highlighting the possibility of establishing good relations with Syria. After his election as president of Lebanon, Aoun received congratulations from MPs in Parliament.

Originally from the town of Sin al-Fil, located in the Mount Lebanon region, Joseph Khalil Aoun, born in 1964, was elected by the Lebanese Parliament to serve as the 14th President of the Lebanese Republic.

Having voluntarily joined the ranks of the Lebanese army, Aoun continued his studies at the military school in 1983.

Promoted to lieutenant in 1985 at the end of his training, he gradually climbed the ranks of the military career to reach the rank of brigadier general in 2013, then that of general in 2017.
That same year, he was appointed chief of staff of the Lebanese armies.

Aged 61 and father of two children, Aoun holds degrees in political science, military science and international relations. He speaks Arabic, French and English fluently. Aoun, who actively served in the army during periods of conflict in Lebanon, is decorated with numerous medals.

Elected the 14th president of Lebanon during today’s parliamentary session, Aoun becomes the 5th chief of staff to ascend to the presidency after Fouad Chéhab, Émile Lahoud, Michel Sleiman and Michel Aoun. According to the Lebanese Constitution, the president must be a Maronite Christian, the prime minister a Sunni and the speaker of Parliament a Shiite.
