Tyler Sutton takes the lead as Roman Catholic’s point guard

In a remarkable journey that stretches from his time at George School to his current role at Roman Catholic, sophomore point guard Tyler Sutton is making waves as one of the hottest prospects in the Class of 2027. With a rich tradition of excellence at the point guard position, Sutton is well aware of the legacy he is carrying over.

In just one year, Sutton has gone from a player in search of milestones to a vital part of the Cahillites’ strategy. Armed with blazing speed, excellent ball-handling skills and an innate ability to finish close to the basket, the 6-foot-8 point guard has quickly become a formidable opponent for any opponent in the Catholic League .

Without a doubt, his keen playing intelligence and composure in high-pressure situations proved to be his most striking characteristics. As the season progresses, Sutton reflects on his rise after leading Roman to a dominating 80-47 victory over Lansdale Catholic. “Being honored to start as a sophomore and lead the team as a point guard means a lot to me. I saw how Xzayvier Brown led the team to a PCL championship, and I’m here to continue that tradition ,” Sutton said.

However, the first few weeks at Roman have been anything but easy for the talented sophomore. “It was a little difficult,” Sutton admits with a smile. “There was a lot of conditioning, and the coaching staff was pushing me to raise my level of play. But I understand that this is all about becoming a better playmaker, not just a scorer.”

Sutton attributes some of his progress to his previous experience at George School, a boarding institution in Newtown. “It was difficult being away from home and adjusting to a different lifestyle. The transition is similar to what college players experience, so this early challenge definitely helped my development,” said -he explained.

Growing up in South Philly, Sutton was helped by local coach Julian Dunkley to secure his spot at George School. Ultimately, he felt it was time to return to the city where he had watched countless Catholic and Public League matchups.

He has vivid memories of Brown’s exploits that led to Roman’s 2023 PCL championship victory, including the spectacular three-pointer that forced overtime against Neumann Goretti. Likewise, Sutton admired Kabe Goss’ game-winning shot to clinch victory over Archbishop Ryan last season.

As he takes on this key role, Sutton doesn’t hesitate to seek advice from former Roman stars like Brown and Tony Carr. Coach Chris McNesby highlights Roman Catholic’s strong basketball tradition and how Sutton benefits from that heritage. “We are fortunate to have Brad Wanamaker on our coaching staff – he is an NBA playmaker, and Sutton has the opportunity to learn from him every day,” McNesby said.

Despite the enormous expectations weighing on him, Sutton exudes great confidence. “There’s no pressure at all, honestly,” he explains. “I’ve faced older opponents since I was a kid, and for me, pressure just isn’t a factor. Throughout my career, with eyes always on me, I’ve learned to ignore distractions and focus on my game.”
