Graham Potter Takes Reins at West Ham, Succeeding Lopetegui

West Ham United have officially confirmed the departure of Julen Lopetegui, former coach of the Spanish national team and renowned clubs such as Sevilla, Wolverhampton and Real Madrid. The managerial adventure of Lopetegui, who joined the Hammers in May 2024, came to a premature end after a series of disastrous results left the club on the edge.

The final blow came after two heavy defeats against Liverpool (5-0) and Manchester City (4-1), plunging West Ham to 14th place in the Premier League with a disappointing record of only one victory during their last five games. In an official statement, the club provided an update on the situation: “The first half of the 2024/25 season has not aligned with the Club’s ambitions, which is why the Club has taken measures in accordance with its objectives.” The Council expressed its gratitude to Lopetegui and his staff for their efforts, wishing them the best in their future endeavours.

Taking the time to carefully consider their options, West Ham were prepared to announce a replacement immediately following Lopetegui’s departure, since the team had no midweek matches on the schedule—coinciding with the first leg of the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

In a decisive move, the club have appointed Graham Potter, former manager of Brighton, Chelsea and Swedish club Östersund, to manage the team for the remainder of the season, with two more years left on his contract. “I’m delighted to be here. It was important for me to wait for the right opportunity, and I believe I am the right fit for the Club I have joined,” Potter said. He highlighted the importance of West Ham, describing it as a “huge Club, in the heart of London, with an incredible fan base around the world,” citing their 2023 Conference League victory as a testament to the club’s strong foundations. : “You don’t win a European trophy by chance – there has to be a good foundation in a football club for that to happen.”
