The remains of the former American president will travel to the Washington National Cathedral for the funeral scheduled for Thursday.
A moment of emotion. Donald Trump paid his respects on Wednesday January 8 in Washington in front of the coffin of Jimmy Carter, on the eve of the national funeral of the former Democratic president who died ten days ago at the age of 100.
With his face closed, in silence and holding the hand of his wife Melania Trump, the future president remained for a few minutes in front of Jimmy Carter’s coffin covered with an American flag, in the Capitol in Washington.
The last four presidents present
Jimmy Carter’s remains have been on display since Tuesday and until 7 a.m. Thursday in the Capitol Rotunda. She will then head to the Washington National Cathedral for the funeral scheduled for Thursday.
This funeral will close nearly a week of mourning. Jimmy Carter himself had asked Joe Biden to deliver his eulogy, the president revealed in an interview with USA Today published Wednesday, the two men having been longtime friends. They last met in 2021.
-“Carter was a straight man,” praised Joe Biden. “Carter couldn’t see the world from there,” he said, pointing to the top of his head. “But from there,” he continued, raising his hand to heart level, according to USA Today.
Alongside around 3,000 people, all four other living US presidents will attend the funeral, from Bill Clinton to Donald Trump, including George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
Joe Biden also ordered that flags be flown at half-mast for 30 days, as is customary. They will therefore still be for the inauguration of Donald Trump on January 20, which the Republican criticized.
