Faced with the fires affecting California, near Los Angeles, the American president canceled what was probably to be his last trip abroad before Donald Trump’s return to power.
American President Joe Biden has canceled the trip which was to take him this Thursday, January 9 to Italy due to the fires raging around Los Angeles, the White House announced on Wednesday.
Joe Biden, who traveled to Los Angeles on Wednesday to meet with emergency services, “made the decision to cancel his upcoming trip to Italy in order to focus on managing the entire federal response in the coming days to come,” White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.
Biden to speak with Pope Francis and Meloni
The Democratic president was scheduled to visit Italy from January 9 to 12, for what was likely to be his last trip abroad before Republican Donald Trump returns to power on January 20.
-The outgoing president, a practicing Catholic, was to meet with Pope Francis, with his Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella as well as with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
At least five people have died in the ferocious fires raging around Los Angeles and ravaging the Hollywood Hills.
