The Brussels Parliament could soon reintroduce measures limiting the heating of terraces and the opening of establishment doors, a decision already applied during the energy crisis.
Restaurant owners are calling for help. “We suffered a record number of bankruptcies in 2024 and the year 2025 is off to a bad start“, deplores Matthieu Léonard, president of the Brussels Horeca Federation in an interview with our colleagues from La Libre. He asks future governments for help.
However, new rules are likely to be passed by the Brussels Parliament, prohibiting in particular the heating of terraces or leaving the doors of establishments open when the heating or air conditioning is running inside. “This is really not the time to bother us with this kind of measure.“, retorts Matthieu Léonard.
This is not the first time that the measure has been mentioned and applied. Heated terraces have already been banned in the Brussels region. During the energy crisis of winter 2022-2023, the regional government imposed these emergency measures to reduce gas and electricity consumption. The measure expired at the end of 2023. The government wanted to extend them and this is therefore the subject of the text which is passing through parliament.
In Wallonia, it is each mayor who decides. In Namur, it has been forbidden to heat terraces since 2022, as well as Tournai and Ath.
