With snow making travel difficult, teleworking and a little anticipation can save the day. But in case of delay, is the employer obliged to pay the employee?
You may have trouble getting to work tomorrow morning. If the employer is required to pay you the full day’s work even if you arrive late, employees are asked to do as much as possible to honor their professional commitments, for example through teleworking. “It’s actually a matter of common sense.“, says Frédéric Mignolet, Director General of the social secretariat of the Union of Middle Classes. “It is clear that if he finds himself faced with 20 cm of snow and neither public transport nor getting the car out of his garage is possible, we are not going to ask him to take the road at all costs to be able to show that he did what was necessary.“
The employee must, on the other hand, anticipate and look for alternatives. “Today we can telework“, says Frédéric Mignolet. “We can possibly anticipate by telling ourselves that we will postpone the service or take the car out of the garage rather than having to desalinate or clear snow for two hours. These are ultimately questions of common sense and anticipation that both the worker and the employer must be able to imagine in a series of circumstances like this.“
