Ángel Di María has once again demonstrated that he is more than ever at the forefront, establishing himself as Benfica’s key figure. This time around, the World Cup-winning winger scored twice in Benfica’s thumping 3-0 win over Sporting Braga in the League Cup semi-final.
Di María initiated a dazzling play from the left and finished with precision at the near post, beating goalkeeper Matheus Lima in the 27th minute to open the scoring.
Barely a minute later, Álvaro Fernández doubled the lead following a great combination between Di María and Araujo.
Di María scored his second goal in the 37th minute, completing a perfect counter-attack by positioning himself in attack, directing a precise volley from a cross delivered by Pavlidis.
With this victory, Benfica will now face Sporting Lisbon in the final, who eliminated Porto in the other semi-final with a narrow 1-0 victory. Anticipation is growing for a thrilling derby between the two giants from the Portuguese capital.
