The head of the Sept-Îles fire brigade Joël Sauvé feared the destruction of several mobile homes when he arrived at the scene of the fire which destroyed two residences in Ferland Park last night. A garage was burning, fanned by the wind, and threatening several surrounding buildings.

The Director of Fire Safety knows from experience that mobile homes that sit on wooden railway frames burn quickly. He quickly spotted a few nearby.

Emergency responders knew the origin of the fire was in a garage from the first call to 911 at 3:38 a.m. on Wednesday, January 8. Twelve other calls were made to 911 in the minutes that followed.

“The firefighters intervened effectively to prevent the worst,” Joël Sauvé tells us. He called on around twenty firefighters from Rio Tinto IOC as reinforcements. Around 6 a.m., the fire was under control.

Although the origin of the fire was easily identified, an investigation into the cause continues. “We know where, but not yet why,” says fire chief Joël Sauvé.

Overall, the houses at 47 and 49 Marguerite-Blanche are total losses. Two other houses in Ferland Park were damaged and five garages.
