Difficult conditions see nine riders drop out in second run
Riders faced deteriorating conditions and incoming fog during the second run on Wednesday, with nine riders falling, including the Norwegian. Atle Lie McGrathwho was the fastest in the first round.
Henrik Kristoffersenwho entered Madonna as the Crystal Globe leader in slalom, placed ninth after the opening run. He did his best to rally in the second, overcoming a shaky midsection that found him back on his heels, to take the lead momentarily. In the end, he finished fifth.
The first round won two stars of this sport, including the French Clement Noelthe reigning Olympic slalom champion and the Norwegian Timon Hauganwho came fifth in the standings. Both men recorded DNFs.
It’s part of an eventful Christmas season, with the Frenchman opening his season with back-to-back wins at Levi and Gurgl before suffering an injury during the Val d’Isère giant slalom.
-Meillard now leads the Crystal Globe Slalom standings with 325 points, while Kristoffersen is right behind with 315 points. Christmas is third with 240 points.
The men’s slalom World Cup will take place in Adelboden, Switzerland, on January 11.
