‘Wicked’ Casts Its Charm in an Unpredictable Awards Season

Snubs, surprises and an unpredictable awards season continue… The SAG Awards are a historically accurate barometer for the Oscars — which bodes well for “Wicked.” Here is the truth.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) have revealed their nominations for 2025, and it’s a surprising lineup in many ways, with plenty of notable snubs and a list of nominees that cements the 2025 awards season as one of the most unpredictable in recent memory.

Wicked and Shōgun, television’s big winner at the Golden Globes, dominated the nominations. Both landed five names each, including an unexpected nod to Jonathan Bailey for Wicked.

Right behind them is the Bob Dylan biopic A complete stranger with four nominations, while favorite at the Golden Globes Emilie Pérez only got three nominations. That said, one of those nominations was for Karla Sofia Gascón in the Actor category, a historic nomination as it makes her the first openly transgender performer nominated in the SAG film categories.

Palme d’Or in Anora also received three nominations.

Historically, the SAG Awards have been a reliable indicator for the Actor and Best Picture categories at the Academy Awards. Today’s nominations therefore bode well for Wickedwho left the Golden Globes with only one prize: the new trophy for achievement in cinema and at the cinema box office.

Notable snubs this year include Sing Sing et The Brutalist in the Best Film Ensemble. The latter only received one nomination for Adrien Brody in the Actor category, despite The Brutalist on Sunday, it won best director and best motion picture (drama) at the Globes. Equally surprising is the lack of nominations for Angelina Jolie (Marie), Nicole Kidman (Little girl), Margaret Qualley (The bottom), Denzel Washington (Gladiator II) and Sebastian Stan, who won best actor at the Globes for A different man.

The announcement of the 31st annual SAG Awards has been delayed as nominations come amid devastating wildfires ravaging the Pacific Palisades in and around Los Angeles.
