“It’s a miracle, there could have been deaths”: the mayor of Sauvian tells how the worst was avoided after the fire in a residence

A building was partly made uninhabitable after the explosion of an oxygen tank and a fire. Three people were injured, including two firefighters from Sérignan.

Two firefighters from Sérignan and a tenant of an HLM building in Sauvian were injured after the fire in an apartment on Allée Jorge Semprun in Sauvian. The firefighters’ minor injuries were caused by the explosion of an oxygen tank. The tenant of the premises jumped from her balcony located on the first floor. She is injured in her lower limbs as well as her arms.

“It’s terrible luck, explains Bernard Auriol, the mayor of Sauvian, that someone noticed that there was a fire in this apartment. The building was evacuated in time. It’s a miracle, there could have been deaths, that’s a certainty.” We know a little more about the fire which, on the night of Wednesday January 8, partially destroyed a two-story residence in Sauvian. It seems that the fire of a candle was the cause of the fire which spread to an apartment while the tenant was asleep. Suffering from respiratory failure, she was placed on medical oxygen to keep her in good health.

Neighbors evacuated the building

“The neighbors evacuated the building and made the lady jump from her balcony by putting a car under it, adds Bernard Auriol. The explosion completely destroyed this apartment as well as the one next door. The structures of the building have been affected and some apartments need to be completely taken over. Families will not be relocated there for a few months. There is work to be done.”
