Connor McDavid, on the power play, and Viktor Arvidsson, in an empty cage, also hit the target for the Oilers. Former Montreal Canadiens defenseman Brett Kulak collected two assists.
Skinner was the Oilers’ starting goaltender, but he left the game in the first period preventively after a collision with Bruins defenseman Nikita Zadorov, who was penalized on the sequence.
He was replaced by Calvin Pickard – who didn’t have to make a save – with 5:25 left in the first before returning for the start of the second period. This short absence cost him a shutout, which is instead credited to the team.
Jeremy Swayman surrendered three times on 38 shots for the Bruins, who lost a fifth straight game.
Stars 5 – Rangers 4 (P)
Jamie Benn broke the deadlock in overtime and the Dallas Stars came from behind to defeat the New York Rangers 5-4.
During a power play, Benn redirected a quick pass from Jason Robertson to deceive the vigilance of Jonathan Quick, who has been the Rangers’ number one goaltender since Igor Shesterkin was placed on the injured list.
The New York team took a 3-0 lead midway through the second period, and 4-3 with about seven minutes left in the match, but they were unable to maintain these leads.
Matt Duchene, Evgenii Dadonov, Robertson and Thomas Harley moved the strings for the Stars, who signed a fifth victory in a row and a second in a row in overtime.
Jake Oettinger rallied in the second half of the game and stopped 21 pucks in a winning cause.
Alexis Lafrenière and Vincent Trocheck both scored two goals for the Rangers, who have alternated wins and losses in their last five games. Quick made 34 saves.
Blue Jackets 4 – Penguins 3 (TB)
Kirill Marchenko and Kent Johnson scored in the shootout and the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3.
Elvis Merzlikins, who blocked 20 shots, closed the door on Bryan Rust and Sidney Crosby in the shootout. He helped the Blue Jackets erase a 3-1 deficit in the third period.
Dmitri Voronkov scored two goals, to bring his total to nine in his last seven games, and Adam Fantilli added the other for the Columbus troop. Sean Monahan, however, left the game due to an upper body injury.
Rickard Rakell scored twice for the Penguins while Michael Bunting set a career high with his eighth power play goal this season. Crosby collected two assists and became the NHL’s all-time leader in faceoff wins.
Evgeni Malkin was scratched from the lineup with an upper body injury. He hadn’t missed a game since the 2021-22 season.
Tristan Jarry concluded the clash with 26 saves in front of the Penguins cage.
Hurricanes 2 – Lightning 3
Brayden Point broke the tie with 52 seconds left in the third period and the Lightning ended their four-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes in Tampa.
Brandon Hagel and Nick Paul also scored for the local favorites, but the Hurricanes responded each time, through Andrei Svechnikov and Jordan Staal.
Andrei Vasilevskiy signed the victory with a 31-save performance. At the other end of the ice, Pyotr Kochetkov faced 34 shots.
Darren Raddysh had two assists to bring his total to 50 points in 133 games since his debut with the Lightning. He thus became the fastest defender to reach this plateau in the club’s history, ahead of Pavel Kubina (145).
Hurricanes defenseman Brent Burns participated in an 884e consecutive game in the National Hockey League (NHL), tying Steve Larmer for the sixth longest streak among iron men on the circuit. Phil Kessel (1064) owns the brand.
