Hall of Famer Jeff Agoos takes charge of the Portland Thorns

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland Thorns announced the appointment of Jeff Agoos, the former United States national team defender and Hall of Famer, as their new president of operations and general manager effective Tuesday .

Agoos takes on this key role following the departure of Karina LeBlanc, who was promoted to an executive position within RAJ Sports, the parent company of the National Women’s League team and a new WNBA franchise planned for 2026 .

With a distinguished international career spanning over 15 years, Agoos has represented the United States on some of the biggest stages, including the 2000 Olympic Games and the 2002 FIFA World Cup. His club career is equally impressive, with three league titles with DC United and two more with the San Jose Earthquakes. In recognition of his contributions to the sport, he was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2009.

Prior to joining the Thorns, Agoos served as technical director of the New York Red Bulls from 2007 to 2011 and has since taken on various roles within Major League Soccer, most recently as senior vice president of competitions, operations and medical affairs.

In a release from the Thorns, Agoos expressed his enthusiasm for his new role: “I am honored to be part of such a prestigious club. The Thorns have a renowned heritage, and my priority is to provide the leadership necessary to ensure our success on the field, keeping the team at the top of the league and fighting for championships.”

Additionally, Portland revealed that Lucy Rushton, the former general manager of Bay FC, along with Angus McNab, will act as strategic advisors to the club.
