Two bodies were discovered in the landing gear of a JetBlue plane during a routine inspection at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport on Monday evening. These bodies were found by a gate technician on Flight 1801, an Airbus A320 that recently arrived from John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) in New York. The plane landed in Fort Lauderdale around 11 p.m., according to information relayed by CNN and CBS News.
The identities of the victims as well as the causes of their death remain unknown at this time. JetBlue said a full investigation was underway to determine how the individuals gained access to the plane. In a statement released by CBS News, the company called the incident a “heartbreaking situation” and assured that it was fully cooperating with authorities.
This tragedy echoes another case that occurred recently, where a body was found in the landing gear well of a United Airlines plane. This plane flew from Chicago to Hawaii on the morning of Christmas Eve.
-Aviation experts say stowaways who enter plane landing gears face life-threatening risks, including hypoxia from lack of oxygen and being crushed in the cramped space.
The authorities and the Federal Aviation Administration are continuing their investigations to elucidate the circumstances of this tragic incident. An official response from JetBlue is expected soon.
