At Falfurrias Cemetery in Texas, the American dream ends for many anonymous migrants

Eighty miles from the Rio Bravo or Rio Grande, the border between Mexico and the United States, the small town of Falfurrias is home to the last Border Patrol checkpoint. Further north, irregular migrants can move much more freely. After crossing the river, then the wall, arriving at Falfurrias is not easy. Many irregular migrants die on the way and their American dream ends in the local cemetery.

Officially, the name of this large shaded area on the edge of Falfurrias is Sacred Heart Cemetery in Brooks County, Texas. UNITED STATES. But here, it is best known as the cemetery of John and Jane Doe (Mr and Mrs X, Editor’s note), that is to say, the cemetery of unknown migrants, victims of the dangers of a region that Mélissa knows well: “ It’s flat, it’s dry. It is wild with often thick vegetation, not easy to cross. There may be snakes, pumas, bulls, scorpions. There’s a little bit of everything around here ».

Migrants that her grandmother helped without hesitation, she who had not forgotten her Mexican origins. “ I remember when I was little on the family ranch, I saw a lot of migrants who had managed to cross and my grandmother used to give them water and food ».

And in the meantime, the mass graves of the Falfurrias cemetery continue to fill up, the end of the American dream for many anonymous migrants.
