A violent 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Himalayan region of Tibet in southwest China on Tuesday morning, killing nearly 100 people and causing the collapse of “many buildings”. according to Chinese state media.

The American Geological Survey (USGS), for its part, reported an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 in the region. It was felt as far away as Kathmandu, Nepal. “The tremors were very strongly felt in and around the canton of Dingri, and many buildings collapsed near the epicenter,” public television CCTV said.
This high altitude canton has around 62,000 inhabitants and is located not far from the Chinese side of Everest.
-“It shook quite hard here, everyone is awake but we are not aware of any damage at the moment,” said Jagat Prasad Bhusal, an official in the Namche region in northeastern Nepal.
