The incredible story of a Turkish national who entered Canada illegally aboard a sailboat that left Saint-Pierre and Miquelon

This Monday, January 6, - reported in an article that a man of Turkish nationality passing through Saint-Pierre and Miquelon returned illegally to Newfoundland aboard a sailboat that left the French archipelago.

It’s an unusual story reported this Monday morning by the - website. Indeed, last September, a man of Turkish nationality allegedly reached Newfoundland clandestinely aboard a sailboat from Saint-Pierre and Miquelon. He had joined the archipelago, “in a regular situation” according to the prefecture, in the hope of reaching Canada illegally after his visa application was rejected. The man then allegedly made friends in a bar with an Ontarian who owned a sailboat stopping in Saint-Pierre who agreed to take him to Newfoundland.

Once crossing to the small port town of Grand Bank, the article reports that the man “willing to do anything to get to Newfoundland” would have stayed in an abandoned house then would have decided with his companion of adventure to reach Saint-John’s by taxi after many adventures. Arriving in the provincial capital, he would have gone to headquarters of the Royal Constabulary Force to request asylum according to an affidavit.

Except the plan didn’t go as planned. Still according to the article by Patrick Butler, theCanadian border services agency was allegedly alerted by the employee of a taxi company in Marystown to inform them that “two worrying customers” had boarded their vehicle a few days earlier. The man in hiding was subsequently arrested by authorities at a house in Saint-John’s. The man is said to have returned to French territory today but has not been returned to Saint-Pierre and Miquelon according to information from the prefecture.

As for the owner of the sailboat, he would have managed to leave Grand Bank, thus anticipating the notification of the authorities, before being forced to issue a distress alert and seeing his boat being towed to the small town of Burgeo by the Canadian Coast Guard.
