It’s already over for Richard Gasquet… The Frenchman, who will retire after Roland-Garros, played the last match of his career this Monday at the Australian Open. Seeded No. 23 in qualifying, the 38-year-old lost to Croatian Duje Ajdukovic, 139th in the world, in two sets (7-6, 6-3).
This is the first time since 2021 that Richard Gasquet, 132nd in the world, will not be in the main draw in Melbourne. The Frenchman has played the Australian Open 17 times in his career, with his best result in the round of 16 (2007, 2008, 2012, 2013). This is the only Grand Slam tournament where he did not reach at least the quarter-finals.
A decidedly dark day for French tennis, with the defeats of the five other Tricolores entered in qualifying. On the men’s side, Hugo Grenier fell against Christopher Eubanks (7-6, 7-5), Ugo Blanchet lost against Dalibor Svrcina (3-6, 6-2, 6-3) and Harold Mayot lost in the first round against Yasutaka Uchiyama (6-4, 7-6).
Among the women, Jessica Ponchet was beaten by Raluka Serban in two sets (7-6, 6-0), Alice Tubello fell to the wire against Maria Timofeeva in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 7-5 ). A 0/6 for the French this Monday at the Australian Open…
