MATCH REPORT | No gold, no myrrh, but 10th place still up for grabs – Latest updates and news in real time

On Epiphany night, the fight for 10th place in the Liga Portugal Betclic remained unchanged. One point behind Rio Ave, heading into the first match of 2025, Gil Vicente produced a first half of high quality but was finally equalized by Caravela’s team in the opening moments of the second half ( 1-1). This result keeps both teams tight in the middle of the table, as the second half of the season is about to begin.

With a positive end to 2024 for both camps, Bruno Pinheiro and Petit maintained the eleven who had earned points the previous year. The only exception for the Epiphany holiday this Monday was Ole Pohlmann’s substitution for Martim Neto – a familiar homecoming – for the Rio Ave midfielder.

From the start, the team that prioritized possession of the ball, the Roosters opted to wait for the first window of opportunity to take a shot at Mizsta’s goal. Fujimoto, Aguirre and Félix Correia combined magnificently in the finest display of attacking football on stage, with the Portuguese U-21 international curling in a winning slide to take the lead. The stage was set for an explosive second half…

And allowing a Costa Rican rocket

Upon resumption and as expected, Rio Ave returned with a revitalized attitude, with Tiago Morais as their new addition in attack. More compact in the face of the visiting team’s momentum, Gil tried to protect himself from an equalizing goal, but it came without the bar being too tested.

Following an excellent move on the left, Aguilera curled the ball into the bottom right corner of Gil’s goal. The screams rang out from the hundreds of Rio Ave supporters who had traveled to Barcelos, spicing up the match.

The equalizer cemented the good posture of Petit’s men – the best phase of the match – and increasingly frustrated the Barcelona public, who were surely yearning for the beautiful moments of their team’s first half.

With the team in decline, Bruno Pinheiro looked to inject energy with the introductions of Santi García and Pablo, the effect quickly becoming evident due to missed chances by Mory Gbane and Félix Correia. Given these moments, Gil was once again firmly in control of the incidents – at times the Rio Ave side caused a few scares – but ultimately the draw was the reality, leaving 10th place to those of Vila do Conde .
