Pascal Jansen takes the reins as NYCFC’s new coach

NEW YORK (AP) — In a significant move across the Major League landscape, Pascal Jansen has been named the new head coach of New York City FC, marking a new chapter for the club as it enters its 11th season. The appointment comes just a week after Jansen left Hungarian club Ferencvaros, where he was in the middle of the current campaign.

Aged 51, Jansen brings a wealth of experience to NYCFC, holding both Dutch and British nationality. His coaching career saw him manage AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands from December 2020 until January this year before taking the reins at Ferencvaros in June.

He becomes the sixth manager in the club’s history, taking over following the dismissal of Nick Cushing. Cushing’s tenure ended in November, just three days after a disappointing 2-0 loss to longtime rivals the New York Red Bulls in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Throughout its relatively short existence, NYCFC has seen a succession of coaches, including notable names like Jason Kreis (2015), Patrick Vieira (2016-2018), Dominic Torrent (2018-2019), and Ronny Deila (2020- 2022).

In a related move, former Ireland international Robbie Keane has been tapped to succeed Jansen at Ferencvaros, marking the start of a new era for the Hungarian club.

As Jansen takes the reins at NYCFC, fans will be eager to see how his past experiences will shape the team’s strategies in the upcoming season.
