Robbie Keane Takes the Reins as Head Coach of Ferencvaros

Irish football legend Robbie Keane has been named the new head coach of prestigious Ferencvaros in Hungary, the club confirmed on Monday. The announcement, which caused a stir on the Hungarian giants’ social media channels, states: “Robbie Keane is the new coach of Ferencvaros,” heralding a new era for the historically victorious club.

Keane, who enjoyed a prolific two-decade career on the pitch, hung up his boots in 2018, leaving behind a legacy as Ireland’s all-time top scorer. He played a crucial role in guiding his national team to the knockout stages of the 2002 World Cup, solidifying his status as a football icon.

During his Premier League career, he scored an impressive 126 goals in 349 appearances, including 91 during his time at Tottenham Hotspur. His journey to the top flight has also seen him suit up for clubs such as Coventry, Leeds United and Liverpool, in addition to a successful spell with MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy.

Following his retirement, Keane made a transition into coaching, first serving as assistant to Mick McCarthy with the Ireland national team before joining the coaching staff at Middlesbrough, working alongside his former teammate Jonathan Woodgate.

In 2023, Keane took up his first head coaching position at Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel, demonstrating his desire to establish himself in the management field.

Now the 44-year-old technician is embarking on an exciting new adventure with Ferencvaros, who won his 35th national championship title in the 2023/2024 season. Under Keane’s leadership, fans are eagerly awaiting the revival of Hungary’s most successful club, as he aims to bring even more glory to their storied history.
