Young Belgian tourists were physically and sexually assaulted on New Year’s Eve in Piazza Duomo in Milan. An investigation, which will open on Tuesday, will attempt to identify those responsible using surveillance videos.
We told you yesterday about young Belgian tourists who were victims of physical and sexual assault on New Year’s Eve in Milan on the famous Duomo Square. One of the young victims plans to file a complaint, as do his friends. The Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs says he is following this matter very closely.
As for the Italian authorities, we learned this Monday that the Milan public prosecutor’s office will open an investigation. This is confirmed by the Italian press agency ANSA.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, the Milan public prosecutor’s office will open an investigation into the alleged physical and sexual assaults following the testimony of the Belgian victim who recounted the nightmare experienced by this group of young Belgian tourists on New Year’s Eve in the Piazza Duomo in Milan.
Four girls, two boys were allegedly trapped, surrounded, blocked before being touched for around ten minutes. We were able to contact the Italian police who confirmed to us that checks are in progress. Several suspects have already been identified.
Clearly, for the investigation which opens tomorrow, a determining element will be the analysis of video surveillance cameras to succeed in understanding the dynamics of the facts and identifying those responsible for these attacks.
Not the first time
These types of incidents are reminiscent of New Year’s Eve three years ago in Milan. Several young girls were then sexually assaulted in the same place, in Piazza Duomo.
The dynamic of the facts was the same as that recounted a few days ago by the Belgian victims. At the time, the affair aroused indignation, but also controversy because the culprits had been identified as coming from Muslim immigration.
This year, there is already a controversy growing around this New Year’s celebration in Milan in this square. That night, several videos were posted on social media. We see young people who present themselves as Muslims, who shout insults at Italy, insults at the police, who shout Allahu akbar. The Italian nationalist right denounces this behavior.
For the moment, we cannot say that these two cases are linked. It will be the investigation which will determine this in the days or weeks that follow.
