AMD Introduces RDNA 4 with New RT, Compute and Media Encoding Along with the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070, FSR 4 Finally Gets a Proper ML Foundation

AMD finally unveils RDNA 4, a new architecture based on a 4nm TSMC process that integrates second-generation artificial intelligence accelerators, third-generation ray tracing units and supposedly improved media encoding.

Improvements to media encoding should be interesting, as AMD’s AMF encoder hasn’t always been a match for Nvidia’s NVENC and Intel’s QuickSync, and streaming software like OBS doesn’t offer still no correct AMF support. Hopefully this will change with RDNA 4.

FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) is also about to launch. It now leverages the new RDNA 4 cards AI accelerators and machine learning (ML) for upscaling.

This could offer potential improvements over FSR 3, which was essentially just mathematical upscaling, with the ML aspects only leveraged for the generation of FMF (fluid motion frames).

AI is also infiltrating the Radeon Adrenalin with Adrenalin AI. Users can generate images, request document summaries, and get support information.
