Hershey Bears fans threw thousands of stuffed animals to celebrate their team’s first goal. They thus broke a world record, but this also disrupted the smooth running of the meeting.

The Hershey Bears have never lived up to their name so well. This Sunday, January 5, the AHL (American Hockey League) meeting between the Pennsylvania team and Providence was the scene of an unprecedented solidarity action.

Shortly after the start of the game, the 10,514 spectators present at the Giant Center celebrated their club’s goal in a somewhat special way. They all (or almost all) threw teddy bears onto the ice during the traditional “teddy-bear toss”.

An old tradition

Across the Atlantic, this is an old practice very widespread in ice hockey during the end-of-year celebrations. The stuffed animals thrown from the stands are recovered and then donated to charities. They redistribute them to sick or needy children.

While this type of scene is not rare, the intensity of Hershey’s “teddy-bear toss” had never been seen before since in total: 102,343 stuffed animals were thrown. A world record. The scale of the teddy bear throw was such that the game was interrupted for 45 minutes. The Hershey players even had to get their hands dirty to collect all the stuffed animals. The match resumed and the Bears won 5-1.
