Monday morning, in front of his house in Ottawa, Justin Trudeau announced that he will step down as Prime Minister of Canada. Big news to start 2025, right? We’ll explain it to you.
“Last night at dinner, I told my children that I am going to resign from my position as Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party,” Justin Trudeau said in his speech.
He has been the Prime Minister of Canada since October 2015.
Why did he resign?
Here are some events that led to his decision:
-- His popularity rating is at its lowest since his election. In recent months, some of his own allies have openly called for his departure. But Mr. Trudeau refused to leave.
- In December, a very important minister in Mr. Trudeau’s government, Chrystia Freeland, resigned. She harshly criticized the Prime Minister’s decisions. Other resignations had taken place within the party, but that of Ms. Freeland particularly hurt.
- Mr. Trudeau’s opponent, Pierre Poilièvre, has the wind in his sails. If elections were held today, he would be elected prime minister. He leads the Conservative Party of Canada.
In short, Justin Trudeau had lost the trust of the population, his allies and his own party. It had become impossible for him to continue to govern.
Trudeau criticizes Poilievre
Speaking to journalists, Justin Trudeau sharply criticized his rival, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. He said that if Poilievre became prime minister, he would roll back fundamental rights, that he would stop the fight against climate change and that he would seek to divide the population.
“This is not the right choice for Canadians,” he said.
