Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces his resignation as head of the Liberal Party a few months before the legislative elections.
He will retain his position as head of government until a successor is chosen.
In office since 2015, he was faced with a serious political crisis, in a minority in Parliament and criticized in his own camp.
Rumors about his future have been circulating since Sunday. In the midst of a political crisis, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces his upcoming departure. “I intend to resign as leader of the Liberal Party and then as Prime Minister once the party has chosen its next leader”he declared this Monday to the media from the steps of his official residence in Ottawa.
“This country deserves a real choice in the next election. It became clear to me that if I have to fight internal battles, I cannot be Prime Minister“, he admitted, speaking alternately in English and French.
This decision comes a few months before the next legislative elections which must be held by the end of October. In office since 2015, Justin Trudeau, 53, initially indicated his desire to run again. But he is credited in the polls with more than 20 points behind his conservative rival, Pierre Poilievre.
Weakened even in his camp
With a minority in Parliament, Justin Trudeau is weakened by the withdrawal of his left-wing ally and the growing discontent within his own party. His detractors consider him responsible for the high inflation in the country and the crisis in housing and public services. Chaos reinforced by the surprise resignation in mid-December of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy Chrystia Freeland. And who could succeed him according to many observers.
This former journalist notably disagreed with Justin Trudeau on how to manage the looming economic war with the United States. The country is seeking a solution to the threats of Donald Trump, who has promised to impose 25% customs duties on Canada and Mexico as soon as he returns to power in a few days.
