why the Canadian Prime Minister is resigning

The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau announced his resignation this Monday, January 6. Rumors transmitted byr Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star have been raising, since Sunday evening, the possibility that he would give up these functions at the head of the country, but also at the head of the Liberal Party.

“I intend to resign as party leader and prime minister once the party has chosen its next leader,” he told reporters in the capital Ottawa.

This resignation follows the resounding departure, in mid-December, of its former Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland who explained that she had a “disagreement” with Justin Trudeau on how to manage the country’s finances, while Donald Trump threatens to impose customs tariffs of 25% in Canada.

In a letter published on the social network X, she detailed the reasons for this departure. She denounced in particular “the expensive political tricks we won’t be able to afford and which makes Canadians doubt that we recognize how serious this moment is.”

A political and economic crisis

Canada is already affected by inflation which is around 2% which could well get worse if the new American administration carries out its threats. Faced with this situation, the former Minister of Finance was opposed to the two-month suspension of the GST (Canadian version of the VAT, editor’s note) and the promise of checks of 250 dollars, for workers earning 150,000 dollars or less. Two measures estimated in total at $6.28 billion.

“We must preserve our fiscal capacity today, so that we can have the reserves we may need in a tariff war,” she wrote in her resignation letter.

A fall in the polls

Since the departure of Chrystia Freeland, a wave of protest has demanded the departure of the Prime Minister, whose popularity is fading. The Liberal Party is also suffering from a decline in popularity. According to the most recent Angus Reid poll, cited by the Canadian media Duty, Liberal Party support stands at just 16%.
