Two images shake the inhabitants of Papua New Guinea. A photo of a group of men armed with machetes holding what appears to be a severed human foot was published on the front page of a major national daily. A second shows a man licking that foot. If a case of cannibalism was not immortalized in flagrante delicto, the Minister of Police of Papua New Guinea, Peter Tsiamalili, condemned and tried “terrifying” the alleged acts of cannibalism relayed on social networks and the press, reports Le FigaroMonday January 6.

According to the minister, the events took place a month earlier, in the center of the country. “A violent confrontation between two brothers escalated, leading to a heartbreaking outcome”he clarified, adding that “villagers took part in the conflict, which led to the gruesome murder of the older brother by his younger brother.”

“These barbaric actions by a group of young people not only shock our collective conscience, but also present a serious threat to our societal values ​​that bind us as a nation”he reacted in a press release. “Such barbarity does not define us as a people or a nation”assured Peter Tsiamalili while Papua New Guinea has been fighting for years against stubborn stereotypes after rare cases of cannibalism were documented in the country’s remote tribes.
