Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigns after more than nine years at the head of the country

It was announced, it is now official. In power since 2015, Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister, announced his resignation during a speech this Monday, January 6. He also leaves the head of the party but will remain in office until the latter appoints his successor.

“Every morning, I woke up as Prime Minister inspired by the resilience, generosity and determination that characterizes the Canadian people […] I intend to resign from my position as party leader and Prime Minister once the party has chosen its next leader,” Justin Trudeau said in a speech.

Minority in parliament, weakened within his party

Minority in parliament, the 53-year-old man has been under pressure for several months: the resignation of nine ministers from his government in less than a year and the withdrawal of his left-wing ally, Jagmeet Singh, putting an end to a collaboration of three years.

However, his government survived – barely – a series of motions of censure. But a “fatal” blow came on December 16, when Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister, resigned from her post. Faced with the situation, many political figures in the country, particularly within his party, called on him to resign.
