The Swiss political party “The Center” must find a new president. Its leader since 2016, Gerhard Pfister, announced this Monday that he will leave his position next summer. Among those eligible to succeed him: Haut-Valaisan Philipp Matthias Bregy. He is currently a national advisor and head of the Center group in the federal chambers.
Contacted, Philipp Matthias Bregy said he was “open to discussion”. However, he specifies that he is “neither for nor against” a candidacy for the presidency of his party. Haut-Valaisan is awaiting the criteria selected by the research commission to position itself. He will then analyze the situation with his colleagues and his family.
Questioned about the presence of a large representation of Upper Valais centrists in the upper echelons of the national party – with Viola Amherd already in the Federal Council – Philipp Matthias Bregy brushes aside the argument. He believes that the geographical origin of a party president does not matter. He also ensures that in the event of an election, the position of group leader would become available for another federal elected official.
